Mothering Sunday history
Have you ever wondered how Mothering Sunday began? It was originally a time when people returned to the church in which they were baptized or where they would attend services when they were children. Families would be reunited when the younger generations that had moved away to work returned to where they grew up.
It became the custom for those in service to be given a holiday on Mothering Sunday so that they could visit their home towns and their mothers. Servants would often return home bearing a gift such as food or clothing provided by their employer. This custom evolved into the modern Mothering Sunday which takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
